Why We Created a Dedicated Cat Clinic at Stoke Road
We created our dedicated Cat Clinic at Stoke Road because we wanted to offer our feline patients an environment specifically designed around their needs.
Cats can find veterinary visits unsettling. Travelling to the practice, being in an unfamiliar environment and encountering other animals can all affect how comfortable they feel.
We wanted to take some of those factors out of the equation.
Our Cat Clinic runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays at our Stoke Road surgery, providing a cat-only environment for appointments. There are no dogs in the building during Cat Clinic times, helping to create a quieter and calmer setting for our feline patients.
But creating a cat-friendly clinic is about more than simply keeping cats and dogs apart.
Why does the environment matter?
Cats are very aware of their surroundings, particularly when they are somewhere unfamiliar.
A cat that is confident and relaxed at home can behave very differently when they arrive at a veterinary practice. They may hide, become very quiet or be reluctant to interact with our team.
That matters because behaviour can affect how easily we can examine a cat and how comfortable they are during their appointment.
Our veterinary team takes this into account when handling and examining feline patients. Giving a cat time to settle and approaching them calmly can make a significant difference to their experience.
A clinic designed specifically for cats
On Cat Clinic days, our Stoke Road surgery is dedicated to feline patients.
We use Feliway in the waiting area and have considered the environment from a cat’s perspective, helping to minimise unnecessary stress.
Our team also has experience in recognising feline behaviour and the subtle ways cats can communicate that they are uncomfortable, frightened or unwell.
These details are important because a comfortable cat is much easier for our veterinary team to assess properly.
Cats can be very subtle when they are unwell
Another reason we value dedicated feline care is that cats don’t always make it obvious when something is wrong.
A change can be quite subtle.
Perhaps your cat:
- has stopped jumping onto the furniture
- is sleeping more
- isn’t grooming as much
- has gradually lost weight
- is drinking more
- has started using the litter tray differently
- is less interested in playing
- has become quieter or more withdrawn
It can be tempting to assume these changes are simply part of getting older or a change in personality.
Our vets will consider these changes alongside the rest of your cat’s history and examination. Sometimes they can provide an important clue that further investigation is needed.
Preventative care is just as important
Our Cat Clinic isn’t only for cats that are unwell.
Regular health checks give our vets the opportunity to look for changes before they become more obvious.
During an appointment, we can assess your cat’s general health, weight, teeth, heart, lungs and mobility, as well as discussing vaccinations, parasite prevention, diet and behaviour.
For older cats, regular checks can be particularly useful. Conditions such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure and arthritis become more common as cats age, and some can develop gradually without obvious signs at home.
We can also discuss whether additional checks, such as blood pressure measurement or blood tests, would be appropriate for your individual cat.
Making the journey easier
There are things you can do at home to help make a visit to the vets easier too.
If possible, leave your cat’s carrier somewhere accessible rather than only bringing it out when it’s time for an appointment. A familiar blanket or bedding can make it feel less unfamiliar.
Try to allow plenty of time before leaving home so you aren’t rushing to get your cat into the carrier.
