Claiming on your pet insurance

Should you wish to claim on your pet insurance following treatment at Milton Keynes Veterinary Group, please initially contact your insurance provider. Several companies now have an online system for claiming, and your insurance provider can guide you through the process to start your claim. If your insurance company requires a claim form is completed, they will normally provide an electronic copy or post a hard copy to you. There are normally two sections on the form, one for the policy holder to complete and one for the veterinary practice. Please fill in as much detail as possible, including your name, address and policy number, the condition you are claiming for and ensure the form is signed by the policyholder where indicated. Any missing or incomplete details may result in a delay processing your claim. Hand this into our client care team at any surgery, or email us a scanned copy, and we will complete our details, attach a customised invoice (there is no need to include your own receipts unless you are including external costs, e.g. complimentary therapies) and send directly to your insurance provider.

Due to the sheer volume of insurance forms we receive, there is typically a fourteen working day processing time for insurance claims. Full payment is due at the time of treatment, and the costs reclaimed back to yourself from the insurance company.

Direct claims (with the insurance company paying Milton Keynes Veterinary Group directly) will only be accepted with the prior approval of practice management, and you will be responsible for full payment if your claim is refused. Direct claims are assessed per condition, and if agreed our client care team will ask for a £150 payment per condition. Please ensure you are fully familiar with your own insurance policy and terms and conditions before claiming for any treatments to avoid any delays or complications with your claim.

Milton Keynes Veterinary Group do not currently charge for processing insurance claim forms.

Pet insurance covers veterinary fees in the event that your pet becomes injured or unwell. Each pet insurance company will have a range of different policies to choose from, so it is important to read the terms and conditions carefully to ensure you know exactly what your individual agreement covers and excludes.

Pet insurance benefits may also include:

  • Third party liability cover in case your pet injures someone or damages someone else’s property
  • Payment for the price of your pet in the instance they become lost, stolen or pass away as a result of injury or illness
  • Cover for the costs of pet care if you have to go into hospital for your own emergency medical treatment
  • If your pet became ill and your holiday was cancelled as a result, policies may cover the cost of your holiday
  • Covering emergency veterinary treatment if you were abroad with your pet

Policy types and cover will vary depending on insurance company. Please make sure you read the terms and conditions for each policy carefully.

12 month/Annual policies – A pet insurance policy like this will provide cover for a condition for 12 months from the point symptoms started. After that time the condition will be excluded.

Maximum Benefit policies (individual condition cover) – This kind of pet insurance allows you to claim a maximum amount for each condition without a time limit. Once the limit is reached, the condition will be excluded.

Lifelong Cover – A lifelong cover policy refreshes every time the policy renews. These types of policies allow for ongoing cover for long-term conditions. The cover amount can be ‘per condition’ or an annual amount for all conditions.
