Silent Sufferers: The Conditions We Catch Too Late

At MK Vet Group, we see pets every day who seem happy, active, and “normal” at first glance — but underneath, something else could be going on. There’s a group of conditions we often call in clinic silent sufferers — illnesses that progress quietly, without any big or obvious symptoms, until they’re much harder (and more costly) to treat. These are the pets who come in just a little slower than usual, drinking a bit more than normal, or acting “a bit off” — signs that are easy to overlook, especially when you’re with your pet all day every day.

In this blog, we want to highlight a few of the most common conditions we often diagnose too late — and more importantly, help you know what signs to look out for before your pet becomes a silent sufferer.

Dental Disease – More Than Just Bad Breath

Dental disease is honestly one of the most underdiagnosed things we see, especially in older pets. Most owners don’t think too much of bad breath or a bit of tartar until their pet starts dropping food, pawing at the mouth, or suddenly acting sore. What a lot of people don’t realise is that dental infections don’t just stay in the mouth — they can lead to real pain, tooth loss, and even affect the heart or kidneys through bacteria in the bloodstream.

Watch for:
• Bad or “off” smelling breath
• Reluctance to chew dry food or toys
• Drooling or pawing at the mouth
• Yellow or brown build-up on teeth
• Bleeding gums

Lift your pet’s lip every now and again and have a peek, if they’ll let you. You might be surprised what’s going on in there.

Hyperthyroidism in Cats – The Hungry, Hyper, Hidden Disease

We often see older cats who are losing weight even though they’re still eating well — or in some cases, constantly hungry. It’s easy to think they’re just “getting old” and maybe becoming a bit quirky, but in many cases this is actually a sign of hyperthyroidism. This is a condition where the thyroid gland goes into overdrive, speeding up everything in the body. If it’s not caught in time, it can lead to serious issues like heart disease, high blood pressure, or even organ failure.

Watch for:
• Weight loss despite a good or increased appetite
• Drinking more than usual
• Acting restless or hyper
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Coat looking rough or scruffy

A quick blood test can pick this up early, and treatment works really well when started promptly.

Low-Grade Arthritis – “Just Getting Older” Isn’t a Diagnosis

One of the most common things we hear is, “He’s just slowing down a bit — it’s age, isn’t it?” And sometimes that’s true. But slowing down doesn’t always mean aging — it could be pain. Arthritis doesn’t always show up as a limp. A lot of dogs with early joint problems still walk, run, and jump — just a bit less than before. It creeps in slowly and often gets dismissed until it’s more advanced.

Watch for:
• Taking longer to get up or lie down
• Hesitating at stairs or getting into the car
• Less interested in walks or play
• Licking or chewing at joints
• Subtle changes in behaviour — being grumpy, restless or withdrawn

Chronic Kidney Disease – A Slow Decline

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is very common in older cats, and it shows up in dogs too. The trouble is, kidneys are really good at coping — until they can’t anymore. By the time symptoms are clear, a lot of damage may already be done. We’ve had many cases where owners bring their pet in just because they’re drinking a bit more water, or the litter box seems wetter than usual — and sure enough, the kidneys are under strain.

Watch for:
• Drinking more / peeing more
• Gradual weight loss
• Less interest in food
• Vomiting or “metallic” bad breath
• Looking dull or just low energy

Blood and urine tests can catch CKD early, and with diet changes, fluids, and medication, we can make a big difference.
