Rapeseed and Dogs: What You Really Need to Know
At this time of year, it’s common to see social media posts warning dog owners about the dangers of rapeseed and can understandably cause concern. We want to reassure our clients that most of these posts are misleading.
So, is rapeseed dangerous for dogs?
In short: serious reactions in dogs are extremely rare. The severe symptoms often listed — including blindness, breathing problems, and digestive disorders — are typically associated with grazing animals, such as cattle and sheep, who consume large amounts of rapeseed over time.
What might happen if your dog comes into contact with rapeseed?
- Most dogs remain completely asymptomatic after contact with or ingestion of rapeseed.
- In some cases, a dog may experience mild gastrointestinal upset (such as vomiting or diarrhoea) if they’ve eaten part of the plant.
- There have also been rare reports of skin reactions after walking through fields in full flower — these reactions can resemble burns but are extremely uncommon.
What should I do if my dog eats or walks through rapeseed?
- Don’t panic. Most dogs will be absolutely fine.
- If your dog shows any signs of discomfort, such as tummy upset or skin irritation, give us a call for advice. We’re here to help.
- As always, it’s a good idea to rinse your dog’s paws and legs after country walks, especially during spring and summer when a variety of plants and pollens are in full bloom.
