Adder Bites: What You Need to Know for Your Pet’s Safety
The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the UK’s only venomous snake. Adders are a protected species in the UK, meaning it is illegal to harm or kill them. Typically, they live in dry, sandy heaths, moorlands, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, and the edges of woodlands.
Although they’re often shy creatures and generally only bite when provoked, adders can pose a risk to curious pets who may cross paths with them, particularly in warmer months when they’re more active.
What Happens if Your Pet Gets Bitten by an Adder?
The symptoms of an adder bite can vary, but common signs to watch for include:
- Rapid swelling around the bite site, typically the legs, head, or neck.
- Pain and tenderness around the affected area.
- Lethargy or weakness.
- Vomiting and possibly drooling.
- Bruising or visible bleeding.
- In severe cases, collapse.
What Should You Do if Your Pet is Bitten by an Adder?
While it’s natural to feel alarmed, the key is to stay calm and act quickly:
- Don’t panic. Your pet will need your calm and focused response.
- Do not interfere with the bite or try to treat it yourself.
- Avoid applying a tourniquet — it’s not recommended for adder bites.
- If you can, carry your dog to your car and head straight to your vet. Even if your pet seems well initially, the situation can worsen quickly.
What Happens at the Vet?
Once at the vet, your pet will be thoroughly examined to assess the location of the bite and the extent of the swelling. Immediate medical attention is crucial because venom can spread and cause serious complications, including blood clotting issues and breathing problems.
Antivenom may be used in severe cases, but it is not always necessary. The vet will make this decision based on your pet’s condition.
