Can pets get sunburn?
Our pets can be at risk of sunburn just like their owners! The risk is higher for those who have particularly short or thin coats, or those with light-coloured fur and skin. Areas where the skin is more exposed are most likely to be affected, and common areas can be on a pet’s nose, eyelids or around the lips, the ear tips, the tummy and underneath or between their legs.
As with humans, sunburn can be painful and repeated exposure can lead to more serious issues such as skin cancer, so minimising the risks is important.
Sunburnt skin will tend to appear pink, and in more severe cases can become swollen or blistered. After time the area may become crusty or flaky, and you may see hair loss around the area. Pets may appear agitated or itchy, and may lick or scratch the area affected.
How can we help prevent sunburn in our pets? The key is to protect them from the harmful effects of UV rays. Preventing exposure to the sun’s rays when it is at its strongest, normally in the middle of the day, will help as well as making sure they have plenty of shade. Pet safe sunscreen is available for to use on the areas that could be affected the most – it is important not to use human sunscreen as these contain ingredients that can be poisonous for our furry family.
If you are concerned about your pet after sun exposure, please contact the practice and speak to our Customer Care team who will be happy to help with advice or an appointment with one of our veterinary team.
