Winter Walkies Tips
In the recent week, we have started to see a dramatic drop in temperatures meaning some chilly dog walks.
Dogs are able to regulate their body temperature and their coat is able to repel moisture and insulate them from the cold. However rain, wind and colder temperatures can still affect some pets no matter what size or breed they are.
Some dogs may need that additional layer such as a coat or jumper to help them stay warm in either cold or wet and windy weather so if you have noticed your pet shivering out on your walks, they may need this additional layer. It is a good idea for the coat or jumper to be waterproof and have reflective features to make sure others can see them in those dark nights.
Just like humans the cold weather can affect our skin and it can affect our dogs too, causing their skin to become dry and irritated. When they get muddy out on a walk, try and wait until the mud has dried and brush the mud off their coat. It is best to minimise baths to prevent removing the natural skin oils.
Colder weather can also play havoc for our pets and their joints causing stiffness. Make sure to try and avoid wet and slippery ground conditions to minimise injury. Older pets will be more prone to stiff joints, joint supplements may help if your pet is struggling. If you are worried about your pet, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your concerns. We are still here for you and your pet.
