Milton Keynes Veterinary Group helping you understand your dog in season
Female dogs if unneutered will usually experience a season (otherwise known as heat) once they are mature. Their first season will normally occur at around six to twelve months of age and then repeat roughly every six months. Smaller breeds may come into season at a younger age than their larger cousins.
When a female dog is in season, they are in their fertile period of their reproductive cycle meaning they can become pregnant.
What are the signs of a unneutered female dog being in season?
- Red, bloody discharge from vulva
- Vulva swelling
- High activity levels / Restlessness
- Changes in behavior
- Frequent urination
- Tail tucking
How to help your female dog when in season
As a dog owner it is important to understand your dog’s season and help her during this time. This may include:
- Being mindful of behaviour changes and provide attention or space based on their needs
- Ensure their food bowl, water bowl and bedding are in a quiet space in your home
- Some owners may choose to use dog diapers to manage any discharge during this time
If you are concerned about your dog’s season (for example, if you notice abnormalities such as excessive bleeding or change in discharge colour), please contact the practice to discuss.
