Indoor Enrichment for Cats and Dogs During the Colder Months
As the days get shorter and the weather chillier, many pets spend more time indoors — but that doesn’t mean playtime and exercise have to stop! Mental and physical stimulation are key to keeping pets healthy, happy, and well-behaved through the winter.
Here at Milton Keynes Vet Group, we’ve rounded up our top ideas to help keep your furry friends busy and content when outdoor adventures are limited.
1. Food Puzzles and Treat Toys
Turn mealtime into a challenge! Puzzle feeders, lick mats, and treat-dispensing toys encourage pets to work for their food, keeping their minds active and boredom at bay.
2. Indoor Games
For dogs, try hide-and-seek, gentle tug games, or teaching new tricks. Cats love chasing feather wands or even crumpled paper balls — anything that taps into their natural hunting instincts.
3. Training and Tricks
Short, positive training sessions strengthen your bond and provide great mental exercise. Teach your dog to “spin,” “touch,” or “find it,” or work on reinforcing calm behaviours indoors.
4. Create a Pet-Friendly Space
Give your cat vertical space with shelves or a climbing tree, or make a comfy window perch where they can watch the world go by. For dogs, provide a quiet area with blankets and chew toys to help them relax.
5. Keep It Varied
Rotate toys regularly so your pet doesn’t get bored. Even swapping which toys are out each week can make old favourites exciting again!
A little creativity goes a long way in making the colder months fun for pets.
