How to Change Your Pet’s Bandages or Dressings
Knowing how to change bandages and dressings can aid in a pet’s healing process. If this is required for you to do at home, our team will explain and demonstrate how to do so and supply any bandaging materials to be used.
Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your pet’s wounds. Best practice would be to wear disposable gloves to prevent infection.
Gently unwrap the old bandage. If the adhesive sticks to your pet’s fur, being mindful not to hurt their skin and remove very slowly.
The wound should gradually heal, showing smooth, pink new skin. Watch for signs of infection, such as swelling, redness, discharge, or odour. If you notice any of these, or if the wound isn’t improving, contact the practice for advice.
Only clean the wound if our team have advised you to do so. Use a clean cotton swab dampened with warm water to gently dab around the wound.
Once the area is dry, place the new dressing over the wound and wrap the bandage snugly, but not too tight—there should be enough room to slip a finger underneath. If your pet seems distressed or if you notice swelling, the bandage may be too tight.
If you have questions or concerns about changing your pet’s bandages, it’s best to contact the practice. It may be advised to attend the practice for a bandage change.
