Firework Season: Helping Pets Cope with Loud Noises
As we approach firework-filled evenings such as Bonfire Night and the year-end festivities, many pets may feel anxious or frightened by the sudden loud noises. At Milton Keynes Veterinary Group, we’re here to help you prepare your pet and guide you through this potentially stressful time.
Create a Safe Space
Set up a quiet, comfortable area of your home where your pet feels secure. Choose a room away from windows if possible, close the curtains and reduce outside noise. Add your pet’s favourite bedding, toys and treats.
We often remind owners that providing familiarity and calm is the first step towards easing fireworks stress.
Stay Calm and Reassuring
Your pet will take cues from your behaviour. Try to remain relaxed, speak softly and move calmly. Avoid punishing or scolding a pet that is frightened — instead give gentle reassurance. It is important to maintain a normal routine if possible to help pets feel safer.
Use Calming Aids
Consider using pheromone products such as calming diffusers, sprays or collars (for dogs and cats) ahead of firework events. These are available via our surgeries. If you’re unsure which product is suitable for your pet, book a consultation with us.
Practical Walk & Evening Tips
- Walk your dog earlier in the evening before it gets too dark or loud.
- Ensure your pet is microchipped and fully secured (collar with tag, harness or lead).
- If your pet has a cat flap, ensure it’s safely closed if loud noises may provoke an escape attempt.
Signs your pet is stressed
If your pet:
- Trembles, drools or shakes continuously
- Hides for extended periods and refuses to come out
- Refuses food or hides when indoors
- Tries to escape, climbs furniture, destroys belongings or injures themselves
