Are acorns dangerous for my dog?
Acorns are nuts from oak trees and will commonly be seen on the ground during the autumn and winter months. Dogs can be curious about these items when sniffing around on the ground, however these items can be toxic for our dogs.
Acorns are considered toxic as they contain tannins. When eaten, these tannins can cause stomach upset and, in severe cases, can lead to liver or kidney disease or even death. Depending on the size of your dog, the acorns themselves could cause intestinal obstruction or blockage when ingested, or may present a choking hazard.
Should your dog ingest an acorn, please do contact the practice for appropriate guidance for your pet.
