Aftercare for Your Pet Following Ear or Eye Treatment
It can be stressful when your pet needs emergency care, especially for sensitive areas like the eyes and ears. Always follow the instructions given by our veterinary surgeons, and here are some general aftercare tips.
Create a Calm Environment
Provide a quiet, comfortable space for your pet to help them recover after a stressful experience.
Eye Care Treatments and Medication
Administering eye drops can be challenging, but here are some tips to make the process easier:
- Wash and dry your hands before touching your pet’s eyes.
- Ensure your pet’s eyes are clean before administering the medication; gently wipe away any discharge with moistened cotton wool or tissue.
- Consider having an assistant hold your pet or wrap them in a blanket, exposing only their head.
- Approach from behind to minimize stress for your pet.
- Avoid touching the dropper to your pet’s eye to prevent contamination.
Ear Care Treatments and Medication
If your vet has prescribed ear drops, here’s how to administer them effectively:
- An assistant can be helpful to hold your pet still.
- Approach from behind rather than face-to-face.
- Tilt your pet’s head towards you on the side you are treating.
- Gently pull back the outer ear to access the ear canal.
- After applying the drops, massage the base of the ear to help distribute the medication.
Monitor Your Pet
Keep a close eye on your pet’s recovery. Check their eyes or ears daily for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or unusual discharge. If they seem lethargic or are not eating, contact the practice for advice.
