Identifying ticks and how to remove if you find one! 

Within the UK, there are several species of ticks that can be found, they tend to be in higher abundance during the spring and summer months of the year. However, they can be found all year round.  

What do they look like? 

Ticks vary from 1mm up to 1cm in size, making small ticks extremely difficult to spot. They only tend to become obvious when you rub your hand over your pet’s body and find a small lump that wasn’t there before. Ticks are typically oval-shaped and cream coloured that turn darker in colour as fill with blood.  

Where can they be found? 

Typically ticks will be found in the grassland, shrubs and low hanging tree branches which when your pet brushes pass, they will climb abroad!  

What should you do if you find a tick on your dog? 

You should check your pet regularly for ticks, by grooming them and if you find one: 

• NEVER try to pull the tick out with your fingers 
• Make sure you have a tick removal or purchase one from your vet’s or pet shop 
• Ensure you follow the instructions careful 
• Try not to break off the head of the tick as it will be left under the skin and can cause further issues 
• If the tick head gets left under the skin, please contact your vet for advice
