Caring your for pet after abdominal surgery
Following abdominal surgery, your pet will likely not feel themselves and may appear unsettled. This could be due to the surgery itself or as a result of the medications they require following the procedure. It is important to monitor your pet closely as they are recovering to highlight any changes during this time.
- Food and water
Post surgery, it is likely that your pet will not have much of an appetite. Start introducing food and water in small quantities and gradually return to their normal feeding regime over a few days.
- Medications
Depending on the procedure, your pet may be provided antibiotics, painkillers or other medications to be given the days following. Any information regarding medications will be provided when our team discharge your pet, including detailed instructions for how much is require and when it is to be given.
- Rest and recovery
Rest is extremely important to the recovery of your pet, make sure they have a calm and quiet area in your house where they can get this must needed rest. You may wish to use a cushioned bed or extra blankets to provide them more comfort during this time. Your pet’s activity will need to be restricted to aid their healing, our team will given you guidance on when your pet can return to normal activities based on their surgery and condition.
- Wound care
Monitoring the surgical site is very important within your pet’s recovery period. Signs of concern can include redness, swelling, discharge or smell. Make sure your pet cannot lick or scratch at the wound as this can lead to further complications.
- Monitor for changes
If your pet continues to be lethargic, depressed, or not actively eating or drinking for several days after their surgery, please contact the practice. These signs may be seen within the first couple of days but should not usually continue any longer.
