Travelling with your pet over the summer months

During the summer holidays, many people will be jumping in the car to their holiday destination with their pets. To keep your pets safe on their journey and keep them cool, we have provided some guidance below.

Travelling in hot weather

Whilst you are on the road, it is important to keep the air conditioning on or keep the windows slightly ajar to allow a breeze. This will help your pet stay cool, as well as help them feel more relaxed. Cooling gel mats are also a good idea for travel – these can be placed in the areas they lay in the car or on top of their bedding.

Be sure to plan your journey

If you can, plan to travel at the cooler and quieter times of day – for example in the early morning or evening. It is also a good idea to prepare for your journey, checking the expected traffic along your route for any expected delays so you can add stops if needed.

Ensure your have rest stops along the way

Along your route, make sure to plan your rest stops.  It is important not only for you to take a break, but also to give your pet time to toilet and stretch their legs.

Travelling can be thirsty work for our pets

Don’t forget to pack a water bowl and fresh water for your pet and make sure it is easily accessible when you take your breaks. Travelling can make most pets thirsty, and if your pet is a nervous passenger and pants a lot, this will increase their need for water. Travel bowls are available and are a great idea for the car as they are designed to prevent spills while allowing your pet access to water on the journey. As well as water, don’t forget to make sure their food is easily accessible too.

Travel safely

When your pet is in the car, make sure they are properly secure as well as comfortable such as pet seat belts or a crate. It is important to make sure that they will not distract you from the road and allow you to concentrate on driving. If your pet is travelling in a carrier, make sure it is securely closed and will not move around, as well as being well ventilated.

Don’t forget cars are dangerous in hot weather

Cars on a warm day can reach very high temperatures.  Never be tempted to leave your pet in the car even when in the shade – pets left in hots cars can develop heat stroke quickly which can be fatal.

Protect your pet against fleas and ticks

Holiday spots can have high population of fleas and ticks, and it is important to make sure your pet is protected in advance of your holiday.
