Should you give dogs ice?
In the warmer months, we may go to the freezer for an iced treat to help us cool off, but is it ok for dogs to also enjoy these frozen goodies?
Yes – dogs can have ice cubes! However, keep in mind ice cubes can pose a choking risk when our pets are whizzing around playing with them, so you may wish to consider giving them crushed ice as opposed to full cubes. Giving dogs ice does not provide much effect on their core temperature, but they may enjoy crunching them or playing with them in their water.
Dogs may also enjoy other cold treats, such as food dispensing toys filled with frozen vegetables, chicken or fish stock, or other dog safe recipes. These treats will also provide a good enrichment activity in the warmer weather when you might not be able to walk or play as normal – but remember to adjust their normal food portion for these extra calories!
In terms of ice cream, many sellers now offer dog friendly options, which are not as rich and shouldn’t upset their tummies – as long as you stick to these dog friendly options, your dog can definitely join in at ice cream time.
